SUSPENSE WRITING
For the next two weeks, you’ll be working towards creating a short story based on suspense!
1. Watch videos based on suspense / leaving on a cliffhanger
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiNxbnBLVVY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07l6HgPDJn0 (pause at 1.19)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYGtLUZg1xA (pause at 1.43)

Make some notes/discuss with your family:
What do they have in common?
What makes a film scene suspenseful?
What happens to you as you watch?
How do you change (think about what happens to your body)?
2. Make a list of suspense and non-suspense words. Pop them on your portfolio as we will create a word list as a class.
Watch the video, pausing at key moments. Try and predict what’s going to happen, ask questions, make comments (Read Aloud, Think Aloud).
Pause at:
12 secs – rooftops – What can you see? Where are we?
26 secs – Alma dancing down street. How is she feeling? How can you describe her?
36 secs – shop – What is it? What does it look like?
44 secs – Names on wall – Graffiti? Why are they there?
52 secs – Alma – What do we know about the character now?
1.16 – Alma and doll – What do you notice? Is there something strange? What is Alma thinking?
1.33 – Doll disappeared – Where? What does Alma think?
1.51 – Alma trying to open door. Why is she doing this?
2.06 – Throws snowball – How is she feeling?
2.10 – Door opens – How? Why?
2.39 – Seeing dolls – What can we see? What kind of shop is it?
3.00 – Doll on bike – How does that make you feel?
3.14 – Doll’s moved – Where has it gone? How has it moved? What will Alma be thinking?
3.33 – Reaching up – How is she feeling? Should she be doing it?
3.40 – Hand nearly on face – Good thing or bad thing? How’s she feeling?
3.49 – In doll – What’s happened? How do you know?
4.04 – Other dolls – What do you notice about the other dolls? What has happened to them?
4.27 – Doll pops up – What’s going to happen? How has that happened?
4.47 – Names on wall – What do we now know about these names? How are they linked?
