In a time when dragons threatened mankind, there was only one man who fought against them all. His name is Tarragon and riding on his brave battle horse Black Bull, he is on his way to work. But things don't always turn out as they should…and one day.
Now watch the opening scenes. Use inference and deduction, discuss what Tarragon is like - look at his facial expressions and the Blacksmith's reaction.
Pause the video after 2 minutes. What impression do you have of Tarragon so far? Why do you think he has tally marks on his shield? What do these represent?
Discuss again at the end of the film. Did anything surprise you? Has your impression of Tarragon changed? How do we know he has changed?
You are going to write a character description for Tarragon, beginning with paragraph one today. This first paragraph will be all about his appearance. Watch the clip again, doodling and making notes as you watch on the way he looks, including his face, build and what he wears. Use your notes to build expanded noun phrases using your very best adjectives. Follow this link to remind yourselves about these.
Now, write your first paragraph about Tarragon. Start like this…
In a time when dragons threatened mankind, there was only one man, Tarragon, who fought against them all.
Today, you are going to write your second paragraph about Tarragon but this time about his personality. You should be looking to include ‘show not tell’ here. Can you remember what that means?
That’s right, all the clues that we saw that showed us what his personality was really like. For example, what did he do that showed us he was kind at the end of the clip? You could start your paragraph by writing about what people used to believe he was like and move on to explain how he showed his true personality. Think about how scared the blacksmith seemed in the beginning.
Sequence the pictures from the opening scene to help you remember everything that happened.
Now, imagine that you are Tarragon, write about what happened to you that day. Remember, all of this happened in the past so you must write in the past tense. Also, remember that you are Tarragon so you should be writing in the first person. This means you will use I, me, my, mine, we etc to write about what happened.
Write the ending for your story. Did you go on adventures with the baby dragon? Did he change as he grew older? How did he change? What did you call him? Make sure to illustrate your story for us all to enjoy! We’re looking forward to seeing where your imagination takes you…
